Week #8: Design of Online Communities

How do you base your community project is up to you, but of course as I mention in all my blogs, the core are the people.

For example if you want to base your community when photography is involved, of course the main topic of your community you will take on images they take or which you want to represent. But when you want to involve your community work they are the best solution although it’s not always the best decision to base your feedback on images only. But you have to choose a core.

Deviantart is a good example of community which is really complicated. It’s based on images and on text as well. In fact it’s a community based on creativity itself. It is a product of a years of work and hard dedication. And not only of staff behind it, but a huge amount of feedback and work as well was done by contribution of community. It would’ve never made without it.

Another good example I have is just to show how quickly you can exploit a market targeting privileged. Is for every one well known Facebook. First they invited students from Oxford only what made their Social network privileged. And then I don’t even need to tell how they followed. Of course it was made functional and functions like tagging in my imho made it very attractive, but marketing made a very huge role in granting first market share for the company. As in Deviantart example we can see that it was made to serve purpose and grew from it.

Indiegogo is a Go

Throughout the course of this project I have learned a lot about support fundraising and come across several websites dedicated to this. If I would eventually need to seek fundraising for a design challenge I would definitely consider doing some crowdfunding. For a design project I would take into account as they cater more to creative projects. I could also work with because they have a great network if I wanted to start my own project, company, campaign, etc.

The upside to using these websites is that they have a big community that one would have the opportunity to connect with fairly easily. The websites will not be doing all the work for the projects, but they are accommodating with their resources. For the project to be successful you would have to put a lot of your own effort into it. You have to actively use the websites and other online social media to create energy about your project. The more activity generated will automatically make the project wore visible on the homepage and search engine. However, even if one were to follow all these steps and create a buzz about the project then there is not guarantee for success. You can do everything right, but if the crowd isn’t interested in the project or it isn’t the right time, then the goal might not be reached.

Despite the no success guarantee I would still take advantage of this opportunity. There is no financial downside to these funding sites. If the campaign succeeds then you would only have to pay a small percentage of the achieved funding. If the goal isn’t reached there is still only a small fee to be paid for the funding you have generated or all the contributions will go back to the contributors. Even without reaching the funding goal you will still have generated some interest and exposure for the project. Therefore I would definitely use these opportunities if I where to have an appropriate design task in the future.

Blog Reflection: Week 6

I think so far I have contributed a solid amount to my team’s project. I have attended every class so far, and I feel like in every class our group gets a lot done. I think I make contributions in class time by actively participating in our discussions, giving feedback and opinions, and working together with the group on what needs to be done for our project. Outside of the class time I contribute to my team by commenting on their blog posts every week to give feedback, and by also doing my assigned work. This was actually difficult at first without having a clear end goal, but as the end goal has gotten more clear I have found it easier to contribute more to the project outside of class time. A few weeks ago I was in charge of researching the website, and I made a word document containing a summary of what the website is about, and how it works. This is probably my most tangible contribution up until this point. In the coming weeks one of my tasks is to help summarize our theory of change for our NGO, this will be my next tangible contribution. As far as intangible contributions, I will brain storm how our team can create/share our final product in 8 minutes or less, and what tools we can use to do this. 

I think the best way to evaluate my learnings so far is my application of them in the group work. Everything I have learned in the lectures I have been able to apply in the group, especially in terms of the online networking and platforms, and online facilitation. Our group has done a large portion of our work on the online platforms, and we have learned a lot about how to use these in the lecture. I think this is also a good way to evaluate the group’s learnings as a whole. Our learning is pretty clear to see as a group, because every week we have a clearer picture of what we need to do, and our work output increasing week by week has demonstrated our learning every week. As far as the class’s learning I think it is actually quite difficult to assess, but in my opinion it is easiest to assess the learning in the class’s use of the online platforms. In a previous class each group did some presentations on what they had been doing, and I thought this was a nice overview of the class’s learnings. As well as this, the spider diagrams which were drawn on the whiteboard in the classroom were also a good evaluation of what the class has learned so far and how they are applying it.

Well, here we are in week 3 of school group work.

It’s going fine, from my opinion. That said on a few words. I like our groups, people are fun to work with and just fun to hang around with. We’ve found some things that we have in common and spent some time together. The atmosphere in which we work is great, we could be a bit more enthusiastic about it, but anyway.

We did not find any challenges up till now that we couldn’t pass and i hope it will stay that way.

If i would do one thing to try and make everything better, i would try to schedule a couple of extra-school meetings, where we can work but also enjoy ourselves, so people can become more comfortable with each other. Which in my opinion, increases productivity and efficiency.

It’s been great working with you guys so far, hope it will stay the same!
