What are your design principles for designing and fostering online communities or networks based on your experience in this course and your project?

This is the last personal assignment of project communities. It is time to summaries the things we learned so far from the views of design principles. The principles I learned personally are: good team building, doing research, keep in touch with your client and proper interviews, find the exact problem and find a way to solve it.

Good team building:

This is what we learned in the first week and it proved to be the most important thing. Every one in the team must function as part of the team or they cannot function at all, and the team works cannot be finished. Individuels should play a role in the team and finish their own part of work in time. Also a good team management is important, how to coordinating among team mates is a science.

Doing research:

Before design process starts, doing research is essential. Search everything, every detail is the spirit. The company or NGO, in which areas they are doing business, what are those area’s conditions, what are the companies strategies, and what are their online branding.

Before we start to give suggestions to unicef, we did research of them: english page, chinese page, which areas they are helping and what are theirs’ missing parts. After this, we come out with the idea “camera plan”.

Contact the client:

During this term we have been contacting unicef, although this is not my job so I cannot describe this properly but I do know we have been making efforts. And in the end we will upload the video we made on youtube so they can see it.

Find the exact problem and find a way to solve it:

I believe I don’t need to describe our camera plan anymore, this is a perfect example of “find the exact problem and find a way to solve it”. The african kid’s problems we know are come form social medias but not form the kids. So we found a way to be aware of it from the kids.

If you had a design challenge, would you join and participate in one of the types of online communities we’ve been researching? Why or why not?

It depends on if I am the leader or not, if I am only a team worker, I don’t think I have a choice but if I am the team leader, I would prefer work as a online community.

The reason is quite simple - we had learned the skills, we have been trained for this for weeks, we learned everything about online communities, the group size, the group types, how to work effectively, etc. Furthermore we actually participated on this every class, we solved a lot of problems like what software is best for video and what is the best for typing and sharing.

First thing first, I want all group members in my team has their won skills, in an other word, they are professional in some way, and they will take the matching roles. For example, I want the technology steward really good at every useful software and willing to help others to learn it.

Once everybody has their won role and work to do, we will work as a smaller group of two, this is my favorite way, and it proved to be the best way in our team working. Since we had experience of “unhappy” team working, I think I am also ready for this kind of challenge, although I would like to avoid it.

Reflect on your contribution to your team’s project to date and get feedback from at least one other member in a response to your reflective post. How would you monitor and evaluate your own learnings so far? The learnings of your team? The whole class?

How would you monitor and evaluate your own learnings so far?

First of all, I learned the bilbin test is not completely correct, based on the result I am a shaper who is the “task focused leader” with high motivation to achieve and committed and shapes team to achieve. In a word, the bad cop. In six weeks team working, I found I only shaped myself, I will finish group work and not hold the group back even when I am too sick to do my own assignment. However I just could not do the same to others, I don’t feel right to yell or judge others.

On the other hand, it shows perfectly that I am a good team worker, I finish group work on time and try to deal with the conflict in the group. I am unwilling to take sides and I tried my best to keep the machine going although I am not sure if I am a good listener.

The learnings of your team? The whole class?

The team work is going well no matter what happened to the group members, this is a interesting side I see in the group working. Last week we tried something new, which is the teacher recommend groups talk to each other and see what they have done, this is a good way, when I see other group’s problem, I will ask myself if we face the same problem and if not how to aviode it, when I see things they are doing well I learned something new.

The whole class is going through a new way too, it is to meet with the teacher online as groups, not the old way that everybody is in the same classroom and nobody seems participating. I admite it is going well because in a smaller group one feel more involved, and it is going better. First time online, there is no host in each group, the meeting was messy, and the second time there is a host in each group, it went well. I believe it will be even better, and solve more problem like one cannot speak and listen and type at one time.

As you think about the learning you are embarking upon here at the university, reflect on the role that your instructors and fellow students play in facilitating yours and their learning. What are they doing? How is it facilitating learning and teamwork based on what you have experienced so far? What has been useful? What would you like to see and experience that you haven’t yet in the facilitation of this course from yourself, peers and faculty? What can you contribute as a peer facilitator?

When I first saw the topic of this week I found it quite confusing, because we have been talking about chat rooms for weeks, the online facilitating, the platform, I thought it is just change of names and stay in the same place forever. Like we discuss about meal and dinner and food, it is the same thing. So I went ask shahab, he explained that there are differences between these tasks. Indeed we have been talk about groups, but different elements in a group: the group type, the group size, and the group structure, how group works with platforms. And for me personally, the part which used most of my energy is all the platforms we have to go through with. I’m actually trying my best to adapt them.

What are they doing?

The team leader divide roles and team works for everybody, the team members did their lot. Sometimes we try new ways like to separate teams into smaller teams or listen to other groups’ working process, I like them too.

How is it facilitating learning and teamwork based on what you have experienced so far?

So far so good, even though we had a little misunderstanding in the team but we do not take “kick someone out” as a solution and fixed it well.

What has been useful?

The researching frame work is useful although I do not think I am really a shaper, but I found myself a good team worker.

What would you like to see and experience that you haven’t yet in the facilitation of this course from yourself, peers and faculty?

I hope to really participate in the NGO like what we are doing in personal branding, to actually have the chance to help them with our design works.

What can you contribute as a peer facilitator?

Well, first thing first, do my lot in the group work, furthermore, share what I know and pull some strings I could as an “individual”.

How much does your personal preference drive your tool choices? What if everyone else in your group had different preferences? How would you proceed as you steward the technology? Does looking at others’ preferences and perspectives change your view as a tech steward?

How much does your personal preference drive your tool choices?

There are two kinds of tool choices: offline tool and online tool. There aren’t many choices of the offline tool, only SMS and phone calls and maybe fax. Online tools contains a lot of platforms like facebook, dropbox, email, blog, etc.

As a matter of fact, I am not much of a “online creature” myself, which means I don’t know a lot of platforms and I’m not staying 23 hours a day online. That is why when it comes to the need of choosing a digital tool, I can only choose something I am familiar with, I will never consider new technology if no one tell me how to do step by step.

What if everyone else in your group had different preferences?

If somebody else in my group have different preference I should be really glad. Because I have no idea what should use except the well-known facebook.  Normally in a team, I never is the person who suggest what platform should use or what website we should visit to gather information. And to be honest, in most cases, everybody is trend to use what they are familier with. However sometimes it is good to learn new stuff instead of stay in the “warm home”.

For example, when we do the personal branding group work, our team leader recommend the drop box which I have no idea what is it. When everybody is accept this idea, I down load one and tried it. It is really a convient software where people can share their text, pictures, documents anytime and if one making a adjustment, others can see how it goes too.

How would you proceed as you steward the technology?

Even I am not familier with platforms and so on I still don’t think it is a bad idea if I take the work as the technology steward because I will choose the universal tool, and everyone won’t have problem with it. It is never wrong to go with a safer solution, and I am very open with all new ideas.

Does looking at others’ preferences and perspectives change your view as a tech steward?

I should prefer it. To listen to other people’s perspectives seems the only chance for me to get to know new technology and online stuff, etc. So my answer is yes, it does change my view.

What is working well for you in your group? What is challenging you? What is one thing you might do differently in the coming weeks to improve your experience and the group’s work?

To start this question I would like to introduce my team first. We have six team members in this team, they are(their roles and jobs):

Rolf - team leader - split works for everyone and make sure everyone knows the task.

Liv - shaper - recorder and time keeper.

Eimantas - coordinator - worker

Julia & Saskia - resource investigator - ideas and research

Jing - team worker - visualiser

From the team formate it is clearly showed we are a efficient group because everybody has their own job, this is very important in group work because if no one knows what their role is in a group the work will be messy.

As a result of the Bilbin Test my role in a team is a shaper who should have a rather competitive personality and to “shape” the team toward the final goal, in another word: to be the “bad guy”. Luckily for me, this team appears solidarity and no nervous atmosphere ever occurs to us. We always nicely finish the assignment on time, when we have group meeting online everybody appears, when the new topic comes everybody trend to contribute - this is how a good team looks like!

My other work in the group is the recorder. I wrote down everything which matters for the group. I think this is very important that we keep everything recorde so that we can see how the process goes, how much we had achieved and how far are we from the goal, and if there is any improvement should be done it shows clearly on the files.

What is challenging me?

I didn’t really thought about this until I saw this question because the group work goes well, now that I think about it, I believe the biggest challenge is I am not familier with marketing or the online community.  That make it harder for me to find a spot to research deeper. But a challenge is always a good start to change myself and see what I am lack of in order to alter the situation. So what I am going to do is first ask some expert from marketing area for some knowledge and then research with my teammates about how this thing work online. In this way I shall make a quick improvement.

What is one thing you might do differently in the coming weeks to improve your experience and the group’s work?

I think the thing I might do differently in the coming weeks is not only do my job but also experiencing others works. First I won’t throw my works away, I will keep doing what I ought to do, and when I have time I will also help others, see what they are doing and gain experience from their area, in this way I am not only learning more but also helps with the group atmosphere. If everybody is doing this the group work will be nicely done surely.

Another thing is like what Mr. Chris Corrigan said in the video that if you want a creative job done nicely you should narrow the size of the group in to 2 person and then form all the ideas together, I mean to try this in the coming weeks and see how this works. Also the havets afterwards is essential, when everybody look back we will find something new.

REWRITE WEEK 1 ASSIGNMENT

What do you need and want to learn about the application of online communities and networks?

For the reason that I am older than most of the classmates, when internet is wild spreading in china I was in middle school, and since in china a “good student” should know how to control themselves, they should never touch internet in school years(not that I am a good student, just don’t have the surrounding of playing computer), I didn’t really know what is internet and what does it do until I graduate from high school, and that is 2006.

When I first go to university in 2006 I was surprised that everyone kept in touch online, because I don’t have any clue of it, and that website is RENREN - a so called Chinese facebook. To fit in the new environment I applied one account immediately and that web plays an essential role in my daily life till now. I use it to get informations and gossips, who is get married, who have a baby already, who lost their job, who is happy about the present.

When I came to The Netherlands last year, I also open an account on facebook once my feet touched this ground, because this is how people communicate with each other here, and I need it to keep in touch with my classmate and people I know. Not to mention sometimes ask when the class begins and who is selling a bike.

From the two examples which happened to me above, it is clearly shown that as an individuel breathing air in the world you cannot be just an “individuel”, to have an network and community is basically the most important part in one’s life.  And a online community is how this works in the mordren society.

There are good parts and bad sides about online communities and networks. From one hand it saves time, you can keep in touch of a lot persons at the same time. From the other hand, some people prefer not to leak their privacies to other living soles, even so, can they live without internet for just one day? Or even one hour.

Of couse there are some communities in which we don’t have to know everyone in person. Like interest groups. Like a drawing group, a racing car group and so on. From this kind of network we could learn more and expand our views.

Do you use online spaces primarily as an individual, which implies you find and harvest information, but perhaps don’t interact much with others online? Are you a member of defined and bounded groups? Or do you interact along the way as you intersect with others in the wider network? Which is most valuable to you? Which is most comfortable?

With the development of global economic countries contact with each other more closely, the so called distance is no longer a major problem when trading behavior involved, also between friends and family “being together” had changed its formates, like my mother is happy when she talk to me via webcam, we can forget the distance in between.

From what I saw in the netherlands or the western world, people mainly contact each other on facebook and email. We have the similar platform in China, renren and QQ and a lot of other platforms to use. However I am not really a “online animal” myself, I don’t like to manage too many digital social networks, so on whichever platform I am the person who never talks unless necessary. When I need information I will join a group on renren which is specially for the information I need, for example I love to see some new design works, I can type “design” on Renren, a lot of design groups showed up and I joined some I valued.

Another one is QQ, it is just a chat tool like skype to me, I only contact best friends and family via it. This one is the most important and most comfortable to me, because I value my friends and family more than other things.

People always say no one can survive even one day without internet, so I did a test myself since I am not interested in online network. The result is I failed, even I don’t post anything I still want to know what is happing to others and I need more information. This experience is quiet interesting to me.

I deeply believe that internet had connect people closer, but the thing is in europe maybe it is not a big problem, in asian countries the language is the major issue when it comes to communicate. Since I came to this countries, I traveled to some other european countries in holidays, no matter where I go, every body can speak or at least understand a little bit english. In asian, even in china we use different language. When english is not as popular makes it harder to do personal communications. I remember when I walking in a hand made market here, a leather bag maker ask me if I can buy some fittings for her in china because she didn’t know who to speak and she didn’t speak chinese, that hit me, even we say now is more international but it is not, not when individuals are involved. The good thing is this gives me a topic to think about, to feel how the gap exist is the only way to solve it.

What do you need and want to learn about the application of online communities and networks?

Our group topic is marketing, so I really want to know is how does online marketing works, who or which online communities are doing it. How effective can they be compare to “real life advertisement”.
