Challenge Accepted

This week’s reflection question is simple. If you had a design challenge, would you join and participate in one of the types of online communities we’ve been researching? Why or why not?

One of my favorite things about industrial design is the challenges presented to us as designers. To actually have to use our imagination and problem solving skills to overcome these barriers is what makes it so interesting to me.

In addition to this our industry is developing so fast that as a designer you always have to be one step ahead of your competition. You have to be the most innovative, to come up with the most clever solutions, to foresee what the future will be like what people will need or want. That is in my opinion the biggest challenge facing designers today. Which makes design a sort of “competitive sport”, in which your competitors are also your fellow designers.

“Design trends change more often than the wind, and slightly less often than my socks” - Suleiman Leadbitter (designer and project manager)

Additionally this sort of competitions are a very good way to get your name out there in the world of design, not to mention they give you a lot experience in the field and allow you to see how different competitors solve the same problem.

On the other hand, one can spend a lot of time on the competition and not get anything return, not even the satisfaction of seeing your products out in the shops or the hands of the consumers. This is in my opinion the most frustrating part of a design competition.

Concluding I would be very keen on entering a design competition online, firstly because I think I would enjoy that challenge and seeing how other people approach the same problem, secondly because it is a good experience and can add a lot to a designers CV. However I don’t believe that design competitions are perfect, I mean a designer can work for hours, days or even months on a design and then not even be selected. Overall I think this competitions are a good way to start a carrier as a designer, but once you become more mature and experience you will want to make sure your work will be appreciated and produced.

My learnings so far…

Reflect on your contribution to your team’s project to date and get feedback from at least one other member in a response to your reflective post. How would you monitor and evaluate your own learnings so far? The learnings of your team? The whole class?

Through out the past weeks I’ve learnt a lot of things with this project. Although at first I found everything very confusing, as time went past we as a group started to make sense of things, overcoming the challenges that were presented to us on a weekly basis both individually and in groups.

So on a more personal level, I’ve learnt what is a facilitator, what are online platforms, networks and communities, which already exist, what are NGO’s, what is there function, etc..

And by working together we learnt how to over come these obstacles, how to work together as a group, how to work together online, which online platforms are best for this purpose, amongst many other things.

Facilitation in Action

Before answereing the proposed questions I think i tis necessary to define facilitation:

“The act of making easy or easier.”

I saw a lot of defenitions online but this one was by far the most straight forward way to put it. The perfect example of this is what Geoffrey did last week during our project community class, he facilitated the communication between the 8 different groups, which is around 40 different people all put into one google hangouts conference. I mean before Nancy arrived and Geoffrey took the lead in the conversation, all we could hear on Hangouts was noise, but nothing that we could understand, and by simply having one person “making the communication easier” we were able to hear each group.

Another good example of facilitation is Project community in it self and the way it is structured. The instructors give us the all the tools, materials and knowledge that we need to do the course, hence making our learning easier. But in the end of the day we, the students, have to grab those tools and materials to do something with them based on the knowledge that was given to us.

The complicated choices in our technological world

Personally, when I need to pick a tool, my preferences in software and technology play a big role in this decision, mostly because there are always tools with which you are more familiar or which you find easier to work with. Yet sometimes I am open for trying new tools suggested by friends or family members that might know more on the subject than me.  A lot of times these preferences differ from person to person. That is why when you are working in groups it is important to make a collective decision in which you take into consideration the preferences of each member and the user friendliness of the tools you will use.

The first step in technology stewardship is making a good research on the products that are available… the way I do this is to ask my friends who I know have a good insight on this sort of products and then I do my own research online. Once I’ve picked a couple of potential software’s or online platforms I download them and experiment them to figure out which is best. If for any reason there are no free trials I tend to make a more thorough research and just settle for the one I think will be best.

Seeing other people’s perspectives will definitely impact my view, firstly because that is what I base part of my research on and secondly because sometimes during my research I might not have come across the same products as other people.

Horizzonte Community

What is working well for you in your group? What is challenging you? What is one thing you might do differently in the coming weeks to improve your experience and the group’s work?

So far I would say the group has worked very well, we seem to have a strong team spirit, we divide the task in a fairly manner and we cooperate quit well…  Additionally the number of people for the type of assignments that are assignments is perfect, there are usually between 5-6 questions to answer in each team activity, so we assign a questions to each member of the group and one person puts it all together. Making our labour distribution as efficient as possible. However whenever there is a more complex task, we try to estimate the appropriate number of people necessary for the task. Hence our team name “Horizzonte Comunity”.

Up untill now the most challenging part of this curse has been getting used to the fact that this is a very internet and computer based subject. This is something very new to me and to most people. For example, in the beggining of the curse I found it very difficult to figure out how to work with the website and where the information I needed was. Furthermore I found it quit challanging to communicate ideas or thought via the internet as a posed to communicating face to face.

From now on I will try to do more homework before the classes, not homework as in assignments and team activities because I already do those, but homework as in read more about the topic we will be talking about in class, watch all of Nancy’s videos and experiment more with these platforms we discuss in class, starting by Google +.

Online Spaces

Do you use online spaces primarily as an individual, which implies you find and harvest information, but perhaps don’t interact much with others online? Are you a member of defined and bounded groups? Or do you interact along the way as you intersect with others in the wider network? Which is most valuable to you? Which is most comfortable? Explain. Finally, what new area or type of use might you experiment with in your online networks?

Internet is my main source of information when researching, doesn’t matter if I’m learning how to play guitar or making a school assignment. However even though I take a lot of information from the internet I’ve never, not even once, contributed to this massive knowledge database… (except on Facebook) and that’s a big failure from my part. Because I see the internet as this global community and most communities require their member to contribute and not just benefit from them.

However within Facebook there are online communities and networks in which people share interests or common goals, for example the “open innovator hub”. I am a member of plenty of online communities. The biggest advantages these communities can bring in my opinion are facilitating cooperation and communication between a larger number of people in a broader context, sharing or accessing information, connecting people with similar interests or simply to show your friends funny videos and share a laugh.

The social network in which I am the most comfortable is definitively Facebook mainly because it’s the one I use the most and probably because the way it has been projected and coded.

“If you look at Myspace, Facebook was a better product. It’s as simple as that.” - Andrew Mason, founder and CEO of Groupon

I would very much like to find online communities and networks related to the design industry, where I could find out more about this industry, the businesses, new products and the people involved in it.

What I’d like to learn on online communities and networks.

What do you/we need and want to learn as you/we explore the application of online communities and networks to open innovation design?

Personally I’m interested in how we can take advantage of these new means of online communication and networking as a designer… but at the same time I still worry about the disadvantages that this technology can bring.

Like I mentioned in the web discussion, I believe that these online communities can bring an immense breakthrough in the design industry for three major reason. First it simplifies research and communication between designers and stakeholders. Secondly a design team can now consist of people from all over the world which aren’t physically together, hence companies can potentially find the best people for the job without additional transportation costs. Finally through this online communities designers and companies can get a more honest feedback from their customers, due to the much valued principal of anonymity in this communities.

However I don’t just see the pro’s in online networking… A big disadvantage of this technology is the fact that most online communities allow people to make more than one persona or profile, so unlike on a face to face conversation, you can never be never 100% sure of who you are talking to.

So I guess the questions I would like to be able to answer in the end of the Project Community would be these:

  1. In which ways are social networks similar to work networks?
  2. What other disadvantages should we watch out for when networking online? How can we avoid them?
  3. How can we use this internet platforms to connect designers to stakeholders? or designers to companies? or designers to other designers?
  4. How can a designer use online communities or networks to promote or market his products, him self and/or his company?
  5. And finally how can we use this internet networks to get feed back from clients on our final products?

P.S. Once again I’m sorry i didn’t post this earlier, but like i said i wasn’t in holland the past 5 days and wasn’t aware that the deadline was on friday.
