Nancy White, what would聽you聽like to learn from our Presentation?
  • Where does your presentation feel most “solid” and what part are you still wondering about?
  • Be clear about “what is the story you are trying to tell.” People hear and understand a coherent narrative (story) better than a pile of information! It engages them. I guess we have a pretty visual way of presenting our information.
We did a lot of work on the design process, and how our chosen platform can help them in this process. One thing thing we are still wondering about is how we can best share ideas. Mostly produc ideas are sceched out and we haven’t been able to find a platform which is suitable. Any suggestions. Have you considered a really simple solution like sharing images on Flickr?
We’re sitting here laughing at ourselves thinking why we did not come up with that ourselves.
That happens to me all the time. Sometimes the simple solution, right in front of us, is not so visible!聽 YEss exactly 馃榾

There is alot of repetition throughout the b specially the chapter 12.???

What point(s) do you think have been overemphasized?
I think there was not much new information in chapter 12.
Maybe it is just me not understanding the difference? (henrik)
Chapter 12 is trying to pull the threads from the earlier chapters and start to think about where the trends are heading into the future. ETienne, who wrote this chapter, is really a philosopher about learning. His hypothesis is that we have to learn “as a planet” in order not to self destruct, thus there is a lot of emphasis on learning. Does that make sense?
Yes that does.
It is just that 20pages of this makes it very complicated to follow and get the core idea about it. For me. It is a harder to read chapter. I totally agree. He uses language in a very specific way that takes a while to get into. But I also learn a lot from it if I take my time to absorb it. 馃槈
I guess it has something to do with the fact that different people share some ideas and repeating eachother comes easy. I’ll have to go back and reread it to see if I can better see your perspective on repetition. (Pullling out the book). Did you read the rest of the book?
I did not read it entirely. Read some chapters that I find more interesting or necessary to answer the questions.
Maybe I should have sent 11 as well, which sets the tech trends and 12 the more global, big picture trends. And 12 IS a summary of sorts. 馃槈
How much we should concentrate on the NGO, our group and product in our presentation?
You should give enough information so that the audience knows you understand the NGO, its context and the product in question. This establishes your credibility, right?
Our “customer community” idea applies to many different products so nor the product either the NGO plays a big part in our idea.
In that case, use a couple of examples to show the range of applicability.
What is the most important thing that we should present next week in our presentration? Regarding the customer communities, the NGO and our group. Ah, now that is an interesting question that I would want to hear from YOU about first. What do YOU think is most important? YOu are “driving” the project! Yes, that’s right, but we are asking this question, because we don’t want to miss the most important part.
For me, clarity on purpose, context and recommendation are essential. Giving evidence that supports your ideas and assumptions (or be clear when they are simply assumptions). Credit to sources of your ideas if they are not your own is also important. It shows you understand that ideas are not just of individuals, but in the NGO context, an important global public good.
Well, we are going to suprise you next week !聽 WONDERFUL! I’m really excited to see what each group has done. And to see how we weave all the ideas together.聽 The video should be 9,30 minutes or longer, right? Because we thought it should be only 8 and we are confused now.

We see a trend in the Sandy support. On websites like indigogo, there are several causes that are trying to raise money in hurricane support. Do you think the future lies in these types of non-profit support reliefs (for short term solutions) or are they going to be used for long term product developments like the life straw or the glasses we are researching?
Do you think there needs to be a clear distinction in these type of fundraising projects on the funding websites?
I think these sites are an amazing resource. I wonder about fragmentation and competition. I can see things from both perspectives. What do you think? (And by the way, I donated supplies I bought on Amazon directly shipped to an Occupy set up location in Brooklyn.)
I don’t know exactly, the aspect of competition might inspire people to make better videos and better the information on the indigogo pages and such. So I think it might be effective. However I do find the thought of ngo’s competing for money kind of repulsive because they are supposed to thrive in non competitive areas. But I suppose people only donate so much of their money so there needs to be some form of competition always. What do you think Nancy?
Sorry, lost track for a second. Maybe we break the competition down. Independent efforts vs independent efforts becomes a question of compelling “sell” – the video, the message. So those that communicate well, win. Competition between a mass of crowdsourced ideas and established, large NGOs may present a different dynamic. I think they DO need to be challenged. A lot of waste and burocracy (I can never spell that word correctly!) So the competition may actually improve the sector, but it may also inadvertently leave out some vulnerable/underserved people. Does that make sense? (It isn’t simple!)
It does make sense. It is a shame though that crowdsourcing then would be less accessable for the masses but I suppose it does need a little bit of filtering because like we see in the netherlands *we can’t see the forrest anymore because there are too many trees*.
By showing both sides of the question, you help the NGO see that there are implications in their choices. If you DON’T bring this up, then we are missing an important thing.

There are pros and cons to these things. Thinking about them critically is important. No “techno-utopianist” Does that make more sense? What are the plusses and risks.

What trends would you advise Unicef to pay attention to as they look into their own futures (concerning the theme/trends ‘technologies’ for example ?)

Following the country-based trends is a sort of research to acquire statistics that will help you in the brainstorm and design cycle. It is so that we can understand the environment/situation better for us to be able to identify the problem hence make better solutions. Good. Context always matters
Following the trends of technologies will allow us to become updated with the possible tools that may be used whilst getting towards the solution. Therefore it will facilitate the work.
Make sure you note where there may be discrepancy between the cost/benefits of the tools. We have to use them SMARTLY

Hm, that is pretty comprehensive. Under education I’d include technology literacy perhaps. But look at mobile phone penetration rates. That would be critical聽 Do you think these trends/themes are good to be wokring on from them? Maybe more detail right 馃榾
What I notice when I present these sorts of new ideas, is that telling a story, giving an example, can be far more powerful than delivering a firehose of facts. So think about the ‘narrative” of your presentation. What is the story you want to tell. Tell a work team story.

Advice can be delivered in a narrative — at least the set up of the context, etc. Just a suggestion! We will have voice overs, in a narrative 馃榾 Hopefully it will be good 馃榾

At the moment we really just need to focus on our work. We feel that we are pretty much on track with our project. Our questions are internal group questions, which we can answer within the group. And we might just take you up on your offer for some feedback on our presentation!

Deadline, Presentation day, grading and criteria

  • The deadline for submitting your multimedia presentation is November 13th, 23:59 CET. Please send your presentation or its link to s.zehtabchi@hhs.nl. (for sending your files you can use www.wetransfer.com)
  • The final presentation and evaluation is on November 14, at 10:00-12:00 in Ov.3.37 and the comittee will evaluate the projects from 12:00-13:30.
  • Regarding grading there are some conditions and criteria. They are summed up here for your convenience:
    • Participation in Course online conversations and F2F meetings
    • Weekly discussions which may be F2F, online in Blackboard or in other online environments.
    • Reflective blog posts & responses – 50% (the average of the individual marks online)
      • You will be expected to post weekly in your blog based on the week鈥檚 prompt. Additional blog posts will be considered towards increasing the blogging grade. Grading is based on writing which exhibits critical thinking on the weekly topic, justification of ideas, evidence of innovation by bringing in external ideas into the course, and clarity of writing.
      • Responses to peers鈥 blog posts – you will be expected to read and reply to blog posts of your fellow learners. We recommend that you reply to at least one of your team mates鈥 posts weekly and one other person鈥檚 outside of your team. Grading is based on relevance of reply to the post and what additional value you bring to your peers鈥 ideas and thoughts.
    • Team Project – 50% (the average of the team project marks online are an indication)
      • Engagement and completion in weekly 鈥渓ine of sight鈥 assignments which build towards team projects. The overall team projects will have weekly milestones which should be completed and posted by the teams in their team work area. The final project should be built upon these interim milestones and elements. Grading will be based upon timely completion, quality of work, and evidence of full team participation.
    • Final team project multimedia group report The final exam for this course is a multimedia 鈥渞eport鈥 created by the team and posted online.

    2. presentation reflects the topics that have been discussed in class (weekly syllabus).
    • Reflections & Peer feedback – you will be asked to fill out a peer feedback form for each of your teammates and their feedback on you will constitute part of your performance evaluation in the course.
